Saleke had been standing on the bridge of the Mesipal with its commander for nearly three hours now. The victuals the ships medic had forced him to down had not been unsavory, quite the opposite despite their names and the nourishment absorbed by his system has helped offset the strong aftereffects of the meds that had been pumped into his system during his stay in sickbay. And while his strength was at a low point now it was more than equal to what he had endured during the latter stages of his stay on the fifth planet of an unnamed system. When ones body becomes weakened one makes allowances for it, tasks take longer, rest periods do as well and one wakes later in the morning assuming a day is not actually missed, that had happened at one point, he had awakened while the darkness had been complete and had not known whether it had been the night of the day he had fallen asleep... or whether his rest had lasted till the following evening. The disorientation of his ordeal was now becoming clearer to him. Considering the date though had put that all into place, he had not missed a day at all according to the count he had kept in his head but had merely awakened early... this conclusion had been more than a little comforting. Of course he had had to make concessions for a differing day/night period. The solar day as accounted by the Federation kept the whole of the many worlds on the same schedule despite the peculiarities of each worlds day/night cycle so that the business of the Federation never varied, on the planetoid of his isolation that cycle had been 28.6 hours, therefore multiply the number of days (162) by the extra hours (745.2) then divide by a normal 24 hour day and you came up with 31. The total was then 193 days or 6.4 months... hence stardate 2408.01.07. The mental exercise was good, it proved that while his strength had been failing his mind had for the most part stayed sharp except for that short lapse. The Potomac was on the viewscreen of the Mesipal now, as he watched the view changed from starfield to bridge of a Federation Galaxy class starship. The man who sat in the center chair had dark hair touched in places with hints of grey, on his right sat a man with sandy colored hair, not blonde but more brown, he wore the red of command as well and would be the first officer of the ship. It was the man on the right though that caught Saleke's attention, it was a man he had not seen in some time and would certainly not have been someone he would have expected, his hair was silver and would extend down to his waist and silver charms were twisted into its many braids. His face was round and jovial and he wore not a Federation uniform but a flowing robe that scintillated with all colors of the rainbow as it caught the light. Saleke realized that Sulan and the Captain had been talking for almost three seconds while his attention had been diverted. =^= I know Starfleet has already extended its thanks Konsu, please allow me to add to it as well. Thank you for your rescue of one of my comrades and his delivery to my hands, it was with pleasure I diverted the Potomac under the circumstances.=^= Konsu Sulan was beaming as he smiled at the Captain of the Potomac, Saleke had not caught his name. "Thank you captain Gene`se, he has been a most cordial guest, even considering the fact he is a Vulcan." Konsu turned a but to wink at Saleke who gave him a raised eyebrow in return. "Captain Saleke has taught me much in the short time he has been onboard, including the deficiencies of my security measures." Konsu Sulan laughed then, a sincere laugh that went on for exactly 2.3 seconds. "I believe though that despite our hospitality he is anxious to return home for which I do not blame him." Konsu turned to give Saleke a smile. "Captain Saleke it has been a pleasure, perhaps one day you will return the favor to myself or one of my crew." Saleke nodded in agreement, his voice intoning out. "Konsu Sulan I have been well treated on your vessel." He raised his right hand with his fingers spread in a vee, the thumb touching the forefinger. "Live long and prosper Konsu Sulan." In the back of his mind he heard another voice. ~Welcome home Saleke, I had almost given up hope you would be found, when Captain Gene`se mentioned we would be retrieving you I thanked the goddess that I had been on the ship summoned to fetch you.~ ~Thank you Riven for the greeting.~ Saleke thought back. ~For over six months I wondered whether I would ever see Alpha Eridani 3 again much less a Federation starship.~ ~You're home Saleke, I see you have some issues we need to talk about.~ ~Not as much as you might believe Dr. Mias.~ The tinkling laugh echoed in his mind. ~Same old Saleke.~ The rising hum of the transporter intruded on his thoughts as the bridge of the Mesipal melted away and the transporter room of the Potomac came into view. ~Nonetheless we will talk, we have a lot of things to discuss.~ ~Of that I have no doubt.~ Saleke thought back. ~Like where Dr. Gralen and my Anelurian crystal are.~ That tinkling laught again. ~Holis already knows, he's on Geneva now; back where his heart always led him and you my friend are going back there as well for some convalescence.~ (Posted by Charles) ===================================================================== (USS Potomac - Transporter Room 2 - Captain Saleke - 0015) Saleke took a deep breath as the transporter beam faded away, this time there was no fainting spell. ~I'm looking forward to our meeting~ ~As am I.~ Riven sent back. ~I'm on my way. Welcome back Captain.~ Saleke stood on the pad and looked about, the transporter tech was expecting him to step down but he savored the moment, it wasn't his ship but it was his Federation. ~Thank you Riven, it's good to be home.~ (Posted by Charles) ===================================================================== (Romulus – Senate Building, Praetor’s Dining Hall Chamber – CSEC Lt. Baylon Trinin – 0915) “Welcome Ambassador,” The Praetor started, looking at each one in turn. “Please, won’t you all take a seat?” He smiled warmly and genuinely, then retook his own seat and waited for everyone else to do the same. “You are very kind Praetor...” started Bree as she moved to approach the table, already decided on which seat she would sit in. “Please, we are all friends here,” cut in the Romulan Praetor with nothing but kindness in his tone. “Call me Vrih.” “Then please, call me Bree.” Frazier replied. "I am Baylon, Vrih." the Security Chief added, a bit surprised at the odd way that it sounded calling the Praetor of the Romulan Star Empire by his first name as if they had been childhood friends. Within moments, four servants came from out of nowhere and began to upturn the glasses on the tables so that they were the right way up. Then, they brought around jugs of clear, orange, and pale yellow fluids. As they approached the away team, Praetor added, “Just tell the waiters what you would like to drink. Here is water, Terran-Orange Juice, and our native Daktarn Juice.” “What is the Daktarn Juice?” The Ambassador asked, looking at the Praetor with a pleasing smile. It was not the Praetor that answered, but his Aide Ejuil. “I believe you will find it quite unique. It has a bitterness that is quite refreshing to the mind, but also a sweetness that is quite pleasurable.” Ejuil stopped one of the waiters before he reached the table, and took an empty glass from the table top. Taking the jug filled with the Daktarn Juice, he poured a little into the glass and carried it the few steps toward the Ambassador. Bree took the glass with a curious look about her, and sipped the liquid. She turned to the others in her group and said, “It has a taste similar to Lemonade, although it has a sour kick to it that is really quite refreshing.” "I'd like to try the same," Baylon added. He always loved trying new foods. “Very well,” said Praetor in a jovial tone. “Let us begin with the first course Ejuil,” “As you wish Praetor,” Ejuil replied, and quickly scurried off to summon the necessary staff. "If I may ask, Pra- Vrih," Baylon began, "Do you enjoy the hobby of gardening? Your Arboretum is quite beautiful." (reply Praetor) "As for myself, I have what is commonly called a black thumb. If any sort of plant even thinks I am coming anywhere near it, it seems to wither up and burn black. Gardening is most assuredly not in my blood." (posted by Daniel Greene) ===================================================================== (USS Hades – Deck 10, CMO's Office – Dr. Alyss Sh’areh – 0918) As Alyss offered another of her scathing remark to the First Officer, he hesitated, as if uncertain how to react. “Now I’m afraid I have another appointment to attend to so you are going to have to see this through without me.” ~Probably a good thing~ thought Alyss coldly, glad that it would finally just be the medical professionals together. Maybe they would actually get somewhere and get to work. “Doctor, I have confidence in you to make the right decision here,” the command officer spoke to the head doctor, before stepping away from the group and addressing them as a whole. “Go wake our Captain up people.” With that he marched quickly out of the office. Alyss turned back toward the federation counsellor. He had been quite eager to use this strange practise called acupressure, and despite her own reservations at using this archaic form of medicine, the federation doctors seemed to be all for it. Deciding to give up with her arguments to the contrary, she finally said, “You all seem very certain that acupressure is the best course of action.” She offered a shrug and said, “I suppose coupled with your attempts at telepathy you may be able to reach your Captain, although I still think we should work in some of my own equations too.” (posted by Dave) ===================================================================== (USS Hades - Deck 10, CMO's Office – CCOUNS Ensign Jon Nayati - 0920) As Dr. Sh'areh offered another condescending remark regarding Captain Sash's treatment, Jon saw the Comdr hesitate, his aura reflecting momentary uncertainty. Then he responded, saying, "Now I'm afraid I have another appointment to attend to, so you are going to have to see this through without me." In response to the Cmdr's remark, Jon saw the Romulan's aura reflect a curious combination of continued disdain and some noticeable relief. After affirming that Dr. Trommashere was to be in charge of the treatment effort, Cmdr Lemar addressed all four of the healers as a collective team. "Go wake our Captain up, people." With that he marched swiftly out of the office. The doors shut too quickly behind the First Officer for Jon to accurately asses his aura. With the First Officer's absence, Dr. Sh'areh turned her attention to Jon. Her strong aura and physical tells indicated that the Romulan doctor still had some reservations about the acupressure treatment regimen being successful. The Romulan doctor shrugged and said, "You all seem very certain that acupressure is the best course of action. I suppose coupled with your attempts at telepathy, you may be able to reach your Captain, although I still think we should work in some of my own equations too." ~That statement was a magnificent compromise on Dr. Sh'areh's part, Great Spirit.~ It showed that Dr. Sh'areh was putting the profession of healer over whatever Romulan biases she might have brought with her. "Dr. Sh'areh," Jon said respectfully. "You may have misunderstood my intent. I meant to use the acupressure as a treatment adjunct with telepathy and whatever other treatment procedures that you three doctors deem wise." (Posted by Jim McCrary) ===================================================================== (USS Hades – Deck 10, Sickbay – Dr. Alyss Sh’areh – 0923) “Dr. Sh'areh,” the counsellor said respectfully. “You may have misunderstood my intent. I meant to use the acupressure as a treatment adjunct with telepathy and whatever other treatment procedures that you three doctors deem wise.” As Alyss moved to stand from the table, she really had had her fill of talking about things. She could sense that one of the other doctors, Doctor Kildare, was also eager to get started, which only meant that the hesitant Doctor Trommashere was truly holding up their efforts to begin. “Well, I think it’s about time that I saw the patient for myself so I can adjust my calculations accordingly.” (reply: Trommashere, any) Satisfied that finally decisions were being made, Alyss gathered her data and made for the exit to the small office. As she stepped through into sickbay, she was promptly guided to the right location and soon found the small secluded bay that housed the patient in question, one Captain Devan Sash. As he eyes quickly scanned over him, she noticed that he was a little bigger than she expected – even while lying down. ~He’s in good shape...or at least he was~ she thought, keeping her thoughts to herself an moving over to the information display above the bed. Quickly taking in the readings before her, she felt the others filing into the area. She could almost feel the piercing look of others watching her go about her work. She knew very well that her actions might well be making the federation doctors uncomfortable. She was about to start treating their Captain, their leader, and no doubt their friend. ~Well, it’d do them no good to carry on as they have done. If they want my help to wake him, then we need to get underway now. No more delays.~ She turned and smiled, then glanced over to notice the gentle counsellor Nayati, who had already approached the patient. “How long will it take you to make preparations for your acupressure?” (reply: Nayati) She nodded, making a note on her hand-held device. Making a few adjustments to her calculations, she pulled out of her pocket another small reading device. “Excuse me doctors,” she paused, reach over to hand out the device, “but I require the items on this list in order to begin.” She offered another uncharacteristic smile. As the channel closed, Daban felt confident that if Jackson didn’t make the changes personally, then perhaps this Ensign Fredericks would be entrusted with the task. No longer concerned with that, he turned his thoughts to the physical safety of the away teams. (posted by Dave) ===================================================================== (USS Hades – Deck 5, Corridor – FO Commander Jonas Lemar – 0931) It seemed that quite a bit had been going on while he had been in with the doctors in sickbay. The science teams were all on the surface, as was Ambassador Frazier, Lieutenant Trinin, and the two envoys. Jonas had also received word from Lieutenant Tarus that Jackson had done well in implementing the sensor modifications, and also word from Lieutenant Jackson that Ensign Fredericks deserved credit. Jonas was just pleased they had managed to get the job done, and would make sure that each received the credit they were due. Jonas was just about ready to transport off the ship now. He was expected by Commander Rhian at any time now, and all he had to do was call his entourage to order, so as he stepped out of the turbolift and made his way toward the transporter room he said, “Lieutenant Jackson, please respond.” (reply: Jackson) “Well done on the sensor modifications Lieutenant. They’ll be a great help I feel.” Jonas turned a corner, turning away from the damaged sections that had been damaged recently, and saw the doors to the transporter room ahead. (reply: Jackson) “If you have the time, Lieutenant, I’d like you to accompany to the Romulan ship Donatra. As Ambassador Frazier is down on the surface, I am sure Lieutenant Maraht can handle OPS without you.” As Jonas walked the final stretch to the transporter room, he paused at a wall interface as he waited for the Lieutenant to answer. (reply: Jackson) “Excellent. Well, meet me in the transporter room on the double. I’m leaving in the next 5 minutes.” Jonas smiled, closed the channel, and restarted his final few steps toward the doors at the end of the hall. Tapping the badge again he said, “Ensign T’Sol, I’m ready to go when you are. Lieutenant Jackson is on his way, so meet me in the transporter room as soon as possible.” (reply: T’Sol) ~Right then, get your head on straight Jonas~ he told himself, as he stepped through to the Transporter Room. (posted by Dave) ===================================================================== (USS Hades – Deck 10, Security Offices – Security Officer T'Sol – 0932) T'Sol had just completed the morning reports. As usual, they were hardly as informative as she would have preferred. There was still no new information on the lead for the saboteur and T'Sol was beginning to wonder if the conclusions that she and Lieutenant Trinin had been making concerning those events were in error. All the evidence pointed towards a saboteur, but the identity of that individual or individuals should have made itself apparent by now. Medical had scanned the area for genetic samples, looking for anything that did not fit. She had personally reviewed every security log for three days prior to and after the event looking for any anomalies, again nothing. Where was her logic failing? And what had the Commander of the Donatra seen when he had made his scans? She was broken from her thoughts by the sound of her commbadge. =^=Ensign T’Sol, I’m ready to go when you are. Lieutenant Jackson is on his way, so meet me in the transporter room as soon as possible.=^= The Vulcan raised one eyebrow at the mention of Jackson's name. She was under the understanding that he was part of the delegation speaking to the Praetor. For him to shift positions there must have been some development of which she was unaware. "I am en route commander. I will be there shortly." T'Sol closed the monitor on her desk and headed for the transporter room. Everything was ready. (posted by Daniel Greene) ===================================================================== (USS Hades - Deck 6, Corridor - A/COPS - Lt Tom Jackson - 0931) om had just exited the OPS Office was walking in the corridor when the call came from Jonas Lemar. Jones praised Jackson and Fredricks efforts. Tom enjoyed praise but was at the same time reluctant to accept it. =^= Thanks Sir - it was a a team effort - the Ensign was a big help=^=" Tom replied. Jonas went on "If you have the time, Lieutenant, I'd like you to accompany to the Romulan ship Donatra. As Ambassador Frazier is down on the surface, I am sure Lieutenant Maraht can handle OPS without you." The first officer's invite to go aboard the Romulan vessel caught Tom by surprise and he stopped, thinking for a few seconds. =^= I'd be honored to accompany you Sir =^= Jackson responded. "Excellent. Well, meet me in the transporter room on the double. I'm leaving in the next 5 minutes." Jonas smiled, closed the channel, and restarted his final few steps toward the doors at the end of the hall. T.J. hurried to the Transporter areas as directed - curious as to why he had been included (posted by: Bill West) ===================================================================== (USS Hades – Deck 5, Transporter Room 1 – Security Officer T'Sol – 0935) T'Sol stepped through the doors into the transporter room just a few minutes after leaving her office. She had considered following the protocols that demanded that members of the away team leave the ship armed, but decided to leave that decision to Commander Lemar. If he decided that they needed to be armed, they could always take phasers from the weapons locker in the transporter room. The others had already assembled and so T'Sol was faced with the realization that she was the last to arrive. The Vulcan moved over to the transporter pad and took her place. "My apologies for delaying you commander," she said as she settled in for transport to the Donatra. If Lemar had heard her, he had not acknowledged her statement. Instead the First Officer ordered the away team transported to the waiting Romulan War Bird. (posted by Daniel Greene) ===================================================================== (USS Hades – Deck 5, Transporter Room 1 – FO Commander Jonas Lemar – 0936) The team assembled fair quickly, as Jonas had expected, and Lieutenant Jackson in particular had been enthusiastic about attending at such short notice. Ensign T’Sol, together with Ensign Dana Travis, had also arrived promptly. Jonas had hoped that Chief Engineer Harper would have been able to attend, given that he had struck up such a rapport the previous day, however, the man had declined, preferring to get back to business with his own engines. That had surprised Jonas – a chief engineer without a curiosity for an alien starship – and he thought there might be some other underlying reason. “Signal the Donatra Mister Rosanov and transport when ready.” Jonas said, placing his feet firmly on the transporter padd. After a brief acknowledgement from the transporter chief, and a wait of only a few seconds, Jonas saw nothing but stars. (posted by Dave) ===================================================================== (IWS Donatra – Transporter Room – FO Commander Jonas Lemar – 0937) As Jonas’s vision cleared, the first thing that struck him was the shades of black, green and grey that adorned the surfaces and bulkheads around them. The glowing white pads beneath his fee pulsated quietly with the occasional flash of green shooting from left, and then to right. He looked to see that a number of Romulan officers had been assembled to greet them. Two centurions stood at the door, looking only forward and not daring to make eye contact with the Federation visitors. “Welcome aboard,” came the respectful voice of an unfamiliar Romulan. Landing his gaze on the one seemingly in charge, Jonas said, “Thank you. I am Commander Lemar, commanding officer of the USS Hades. This is Lieutenant Jackson, Ensign T’Sol, and Ensign Travis.” Jonas indicated to each in turn and watched as each officer stepped down from the transporter pads. (reply: Jackson, T’Sol) “So, where is your Commander Rhian? I am keen to meet with him again.” Jonas could see that the Romulan before him was not used to such familiar and friendly tones as Jonas was using. He made a mental note to dial it back a few notches. “Commander Rhian is awaiting your arrival in one of our viewing modules.” The Romulan darted a glance to the centurions at the door. No further sound escaped his lips, but an instantly later the centurions opened the door and stepped out into the corridor. If Jonas didn’t know better, he would have said they were communicating telepathically. As the Romulan also turned and headed out of the room Jonas said, “Then lead on,” making the fruitless offer given that the Romulan had already decided to walk away without warning. “Stay close and keep your eyes peeled. This is going to be very interesting.” Jonas smiled, then turned to follow the Romulan in front. (posted by Dave) ===================================================================== (USS Hades - Deck 5, Transporter Room 1 - Lt tom Jackson - 0937) Tom greeted the other members of the Away team and stepped up on the padd. (posted by: Bill West) ===================================================================== (IWS Donatra – Transporter Room – Security Officer T'Sol – 0938) The rematerialization aboard the Donatra was an interesting experience. T'Sol's eyes took in a large number of details at once. These ranged from the lighting and coloration of the compartment to the number and composition of the assembled Romulan officers and crew. “Welcome aboard,” a man' voice said and commander Lemar replied immediately with introductions. "Thank you. I am Commander Lemar, commanding officer of the USS Hades. This is Lieutenant Jackson, Ensign T’Sol, and Ensign Travis.” T'Sol stepped down from the white green transporter pad as she was introduced and replied with. "Peace and long life." (reply Jackson, Romulan Officer iyw) “So, where is your Commander Rhian? I am keen to meet with him again.” Lemar asked. T'Sol immediately noted a shift in the Romulan officer's facial expression and wondered if it was due to the tone that Lemar had chosen to use. Many species would be uncomfortable with such an informal discussion when meeting another species for the first time. If there was anything other than a passing thought, however, the Romulan officer let it pass without worry. He replied, "Commander Rhian is awaiting your arrival in one of our viewing modules." The door opened as if it had been carefully rehearsed and Commander Lemar made a gesture followed by the colloquial comment of 'lead on'. Their escorting officer however had already started moving providing the commander with a chance to speak quietly to his officers as they filed out the door. "Stay close and keep your eyes peeled. This is going to be very interesting." T'Sol nodded, although she found the imagery associated with that particular Terran phrase distasteful. She then followed the rest of the party into the corridor behind their escort. (posted by Daniel Greene) ===================================================================== (IWS Donatra - Transporter Room - A/COPS Lt Tom Jackson - 0938) Jackson's field of vision cleared, the first thing that struck him was the shades of color decorating the area. Some Romulans had assembled to greet the Federation officers. Jackson sensed they were as nervous as he was! Jonas Lamar made the introductions and asked where Commander Rihan was? They had followed the senior Romulan officer to where Rihan was indicated to be. Tom did not need Lamar's advice to stay close and keep his eyes open and observe,. (posted by: Bill West) ===================================================================== (IWS Donatra – Observation Dome – FO Commander Jonas Lemar – 0945) Following the centurion’s as quickly as he could, Jonas was still able to keep a keen eye on his surrounding will on route to meet with the Romulan Commander. He noticed that much of the decor on a ship like this was clear designed for functionality, rather than aesthetics. It was quite clear to Jonas now, why the Romulan’s had been so perplexed during their visit to the Hades the day previous. It was probably one of the first times they had seen a military ship designed in such a way. Slowing his pace a little, he allowed Ensign T’Sol to get within ear shot and with a turn of his head he asked quietly, “Do you recall our route, Ensign?” Jonas wondered whether, if an emergency occurred, T’Sol would be able to find their way back to the transporter room without aid. (reply: T’Sol) Glad to be reassured by his security officer, Jonas then dropped back to speak briefly with Jackson, “Thank you for attending Lieutenant. I know you have a lot on your plate at the moment, but I thought this might be a welcomed respite.” (reply: Jackson) Smiling warmly at the Lieutenant’s comments, Jonas moved back toward the head of their small group just in time for them to arrive at their location. The centurion’s had stopped at an open door, and they were being guided inside. As Jonas stepped in, he was quite amazed at the view. The entire outer bulkhead was made of some kind of opaque material that allowed you to see right through into the vastness of space. He found the view breathtaking as he noticed the majestic design of the emerald steel hull of the warbird. At a quick glance, it appeared that this observation area was located somewhere along the belly of the great warship, as beneath them was the glorious blue and green planet of Romulus, homeworld of the Romulan Empire. Finally drawing his eyes back into the room they were in, Jonas saw a figure standing with his back to them, hands clasped behind his back, and looking out into space. Despite his back turned, Jonas could recognise the posture as that of the Commander. “This is a stunning view commander,” Jonas said, taking a few more steps inside. “It appears you have managed to out-do me.” Jonas grinned, and turned to his other officers to see if they were as impressed as he. (posted by Dave) ===================================================================== (Romulus - Institute of Advanced Scientific Studies, Singularity lab - Science Officer Ensign Harry Doorman - 0950) "Of course not," Xerius nodded. "The black hole itself is not the singularity which is the fundamental region of infinite mass and infinite gravity that forms the event horizon. The area within the event horizon is referred to as a black hole because nothing can be perceived within it owing to the gravitational pull which will not allow even light to escape and in the case of interstellar phenomena is of titanic size. Here, however, we are working with a singularity far less massive with an event horizon of only 1.3 meters in diameter. You can see from that then the relative weakness of it. There is no need to be concerned. The possibility of such a one breaking containment and continuing its existence, much less growing to consume the planet is infinitesimal. You are more likely to die of starvation within a ripe vegetable field than to witness such a catastrophe." Shayhiloosh nodded an eyestalk in comprehension. "So the power it takes to maintain the singularity must be much less that the energy it exudes, else it would not be feasible to maintain the singularity in the first place," deduced Shayhiloosh logically. "Does it provide power for this Institute?" (reply Xerius) "I might also add, that the Prefect himself has contributed to the field of singularity creation. It was actually his Unified Theory of Gravitational Dispersion which defined the rate at which a given singularity will dissipate as well as the release of energy as it did so to be calculated- where the gravitational forces at the core of the singularity, the inverse distance from the event horizon (i.e. the radius of the singularity) and the mean magnetic constant are known factors. Each of these are easily measured." Harry glanced down at the monitor and did the math, "If this singularity were to collapse at this very moment, the released energy would be 12,856.8 mega joules, which is equitable to a terran lightning strike. The energy compensators," Harry pointed to a pair of lightning rod like devices, "would absorb all of that before it could do any real damage. The dissipation rate of this particular singularity would only last maybe fifty or sixty nanoseconds. Assuming that any gravitons were emitted, their decay rate might make you dizzy as they interacted with your inner ear, if they were even noticeable." "Prefect Xerius is being modest. His contributions to the field of quantum mechanics, are what made the safe creation and experimentation of Singularities possible for the Empire. His equations took the original quantum sets and formulas and turned them on their ears and opened the widespread use of singularities as power sources. He is to quantum singularities, what Emerson was to the Warp field, in that they both worked from the equations and theories of great beings but without their contributions the real value of either the warp field or the quantum singularity could not have been fully realized." "They made safe, stable power sources available for their respective peoples. Emerson for the UFP and Prefect Xerius for the RSE." Harry concluded. (posted by Daniel Greene) ===================================================================== (Romulus - Institute of Advanced Scientific Studies, Singularity lab - Prefect Xerius - 0952) What could only have been an eyestalk from the plant-being nodded at Xerius' statement about the unlikelihood of worldwide catastrophe being caused by the contained singularity. "So the power it takes to maintain the singularity must be much less that the energy it exudes, else it would not be feasible to maintain the singularity in the first place," deduced Shayhiloosh logically. "Does it provide power for this Institute?" "In a word, yes." Xerius affirmed. "It takes quite a bit of power to create the artificial singularity but once it is created only a small portion of the energy it gives off is necessary for its continuation and to keep it stable. The amount of power needed for its maintenance has been reduced only within the last few weeks another 1.3 percent, down from 7.8 to 6.5 percent. The total power output from this generator is 18.4 terrawatts, far more than enough for this facility to use." Xerius gave the rest of the group a pleased look as well. "This is my pride and joy as it were, I appreciate your interest in it." Then that red-headed scientist spoke up again, Tellus was in the midst of checking up on his background already, what Mr. Doorman said now though added far more fuel to the mystery of just who this man was... and how much he knew. "I might also add, that the Prefect himself has contributed to the field of singularity creation. Each of these are easily measured." The man then did some quick calculations after taking another look at the graphs, "If this singularity were to collapse at this very moment, the released energy would be 12,856.8 mega joules, which is equitable to a terran lightning strike. The energy compensators would absorb all of that before it could do any real damage. He is to quantum singularities, what Emerson was to the Warp field, in that they both worked from the equations and theories of great beings but without their contributions the real value of either the warp field or the quantum singularity could not have been fully realized. They made safe, stable power sources available for their respective peoples. Emerson for the UFP and Prefect Xerius for the RSE." Harry concluded. Xerius' dark eyes studied the man for a split-second after he concluded his presentation, he didn't like mysteries, not the kind that dealt with personalities like the enigma he saw before him today. Xerius had been a scientist with few peers since his breakthrough theories had revolutionized singularity creation and energetic particle manipulations which had put him at the pinnacle of his craft. And here was a man who was not a Romulan, who was a member of what until this day had been an enemy race... who spoke about his accomplishments as though they were common knowledge. "Thank you Mr. Doorman." He said evenly, that flicker of interest burning deeply in his eyes having been stoked to a greater degree. "You must take the time later to enlighten me on why you are so well versed in this science which for so long has been uniquely Romulan." The upturned corners of his lips indicated some flickering humor. "I admit to some fascination with the subject." (Reply: Harry iyw) The lab now having been exhaustively discussed Xerius gave the scientist within another signal then flicked off power to the display unit and panel then turned to go. "If any are interested in coming back later I can certainly arrange it, at this time however we must continue the tour; please come with me." He was not sure what to ask, to be honest, and he did not even come close to anything that Harry or Shayhiloosh asked. In truth; he was not familiar with Romulan science or the knowledge there of, but he was happy to listen, and he felt that he learnt something today. He also could have sworn that Xerius sounded respectful at times. Kenny stood with his arms behind his back. Not really at attention, but it was better than looking board. Not that he was board, he just didn't want to give that impression since he was not asking anything. He was impressed about the black hole. He knew that the Romulans used them, but he had no idea how far they where with their knowledge on it. He looked over at Centurion Tellus, still at a consol that Xerius had placed him at earlier. The Centurion looked back at Kenny with...Well; Kenny was not sure if it was a frown or a disapproving look. Whatever it was, it caused Kenny to look back at the party. ===================================================================== (Romulus - Institute of Advanced Scientific Studies, Hallway - Prefect Xerius - 0953) Turning on his heel he then walked smartly through the exit, this time though waiting outside for all to catch up then set a brisk pace to an adjacent hall. After walking through to another side-corridor he stopped just inside the turn of another and turned to face the group. "Stand still please." Reaching to the wall he tapped a switch that had not been readily noticeable and the floor began moving a a quick pace beneath them. "The Arboretum is nearly two kilometers from the science labs, not far enough to take the trouble to transport to and yet too far for a quick walk. We will be there shortly." Two minutes later the end of the hall came into sight at two great bronze valves that blocked the way, as they came near it the moving floor slowed and halted. Xerius looked back and motioned with a movement of his head for all to follow then made for them. The monstrous doors were flanked by marble columns of green, gold and brown, as he neared it the door slid smoothly and silently apart. Harry's information had allowed the Federation scientists to realize for themselves that the Prefect was a working scientist, still actively pursuing his work in quantum singularities while also handling the affairs of the institute's administrative duties. The proof was here in the lab with them and now that Xerius' accomplishments were known, they could be measured by the science team members in an entirely new light. It lent credibility to a man that perhaps before then had only been a Romulan bureaucrat, something that all true scientists hated. But now, he was a scientist, who was administrating his own projects and apparently had the skill and ability to manage many more. Harry could almost detect the difference in their acceptance of their guide, except for the terrible headache he had behind his eyes. "Thank you Mr. Doorman." Xerius said evenly, "You must take the time later to enlighten me on why you are so well versed in this science which for so long has been uniquely Romulan." The upturned corners of his lips indicated some flickering humor. "I admit to some fascination with the subject." "I would be honored to discuss my interests on the subject with you Prefect." Harry replied smiling. "If any are interested in coming back later I can certainly arrange it, at this time however we must continue the tour; please come with me." (posted by Daniel Greene) ===================================================================== (Romulus - Institute of Advanced Scientific Studies, Hallway - ACSO Ensign Kenneth McKeznie - 0953.5) "Stand still please." said Xerius as they stood in the hallway. Kenny looked around; Mostly just plain walls. He guessed that the Romulans did not wish to decorate small hallways in a place like this. The Romulan Scientist used his heal to tap one of the floor panels which opened the door ahead of them. Kenny though; Why would they need a secret panel for a place like this? It was an arboretum, not the Romluain version of Fort Knocks. Meh; Maybe it was just their way. Maybe having plain doors for even the most public areas, like the Federation does, would be strange to them. It maybe him think that the Romulans liked buildings build like a giant puzzle. "The Arboretum is nearly two kilometers from the science labs, not far enough to take the trouble to transport to and yet too far for a quick walk. We will be there shortly." Kenny wondered if Xerius was insulting them. The way he spoke of their destination not being far enough to transported made Kenny wonder if the Romlulans though that the Federation was lazy and transported everywhere? He shrugged and dismissed the thought. He smiled; He was impressed by the moving floor, though. All colors of the rainbow and more. The 'sky' was a dome of transparent material which allowed in the Romulan sunlight and much.. much more. "This arboretum..." Xerius swept both hands out in an expansive gesture. "Stretches for three hundred acres and encompasses all the plantlife of Romulus and what vegetable life has existed on Remus as well as specimens from a dozen other worlds. It exists on six levels including two subterranean and three aerial. The dome filters the light in various places for the plantilfe, insuring that they get the wavelengths they need for their particular form of photosynthesis." He looked at each one in turn, a knowing smile flicking at the corners of his lips. "While it is a beautiful place do not take it lightly, it is also full of danger, take for example this Jorn Tree." Walking to a nearby tree and stopping several feet from it he unstrapped the belt from his waist and coiling it, whipped one end quickly toward the trunk, as it struck the tree there was an audible 'Snap!'. Turning about he walked back to the group, holding up the belt for all to see. "The Jorn tree houses its thorns within itself and releases them as a defense mechanism." He brought up the end and showed them a dozen, three inch thorns with discolored tips which had embedded themselves halfway through the tough material. "Needless to say explore to your hearts content but take care of what you touch." (Posted by Charles) ===================================================================== (Romulus - Institute of Advanced Scientific Studies, Arboretum - Science Officer Ensign Harry Doorman - 0955) The trip to the Arboretum was almost as interesting as the structure itself. The Prefect explained the layout and the scope of the structure and then the types of plants that it contained. While the entirety of the area sounded interesting, the practical demonstration did not sit particularly well with Harry. So when the others spread out to investigate, Harry decided to stay close to the door. He'd rather review the data later on a monitor. (posted by Daniel Greene) ===================================================================== (Romulus - Institute of Advanced Scientific Studies, Arboretum – Prefect Xerius - 0956) "This is a beautiful place your people have created Sir," One eyestalk was firmly fixed on him while another pair were dancing about, trying to encompass the magnificence of the varied vegetatation under the banner of the RSE. "If we stay walking on the pathways, should we be safe?" Xerius nodded his head in affirmation. "Nothing will attack you if you stay on the paths, indeed there is little to fear unless you undertake to eat or attack the vegetation, there are only a few varieties that are aggressive and they are in isolated ecosystems." "Have you any animal life here that we need to be wary of? I wondered if you had completed the ecosystem with various birds, insects and small animals," said the Arborian. That brought a wisp of smile to Xerius face. "Of course, in order for the normal life cycle of many species to be continued insects and some bids and small animals must be included. It would therefore be unhealthy then for them to be excluded. I do believe you will find many to be quite exotic, and extremely beautiful." Having answered Shayhiloosh's questions Xerius entertained himself with watching the reactions of the landing party as they toured the great botanical garden, one of the 5 Wonders of the Romulan Star Empire. The tour of it had been something he had included just for the pleasure of watching the unmitigated joy asnd wonder it would create... that it did so was certainly unsurprising... and satisfying at the same time. (Posted by Charles) ===================================================================== (Romulus - Institute of Advanced Scientific Studies, Arboretum – ACSO Ensign Shayhiloosh - 0957) After a lot of walking and an interesting ride on a sort of elevated floor plate, they entered through some massive doors into what the Prefect called an Arboretum. Shayhiloosh would have called it a Botanical Park due to its immense size from what the Prefect was describing. It was lush and exquisitely colorful and pleasing to even Arborian eyes and senses. The subterranean passages and aerial levels sounded just as fascinating. Shayhiloosh wanted to immediately explore every inch of all six levels and knew there could not possibly be enough time to see it all even if s/he were there for days or weeks. The square area was massive. The Prefect demonstrated some of the Arboretum's dangers as well in an effort to warn them about how serious it was to be careful. When the Prefect had finished showing them the long thorns that had come out of the tree, Shayhiloosh could not contain hir awe and joy any longer. "This is a beautiful place your people have created Sir," said Shayhiloosh sincerely, assigning one eyestalk to the Prefect. The other two were fully extended and bobbing about with uninhibited delight. "If we stay walking on the pathways, should we be safe?" (Reply Xerius, Any) "Have you any animal life here that we need to be wary of? I wondered if you had completed the ecosystem with various birds, insects and small animals," said the Arborian. Reply Xerius, Any) Shayhiloosh was vacillating between joy and uncertainty as to what to look at first. Spying a path s/he moved hesitantly onto it. It was made of reddish wood chips, alternating charmingly with gray and green round cast paving stones. S/he could see when it reached the nearby trees, the path changed into tough springy deep green and purple mosses and continued on, winding between the cool shade of the trees. "Ensign Doorman, would you like to accompany me?" asked Shayhiloosh. "I would enjoy your companionship and anyone else that wishes to come along." S/he hefted all of hir tricorders and activating them, began recording in differing directions. (Reply Harry Doorman, Any) S/he made sure to point a tricorder in the direction of the curved dome that began in back of them by the door they entered and arced up so high overhead. It was immense and composed of triangular pieces that were put together on a frame. It was a massive feat of architectural engineering by its size alone. Shayhiloosh wondered if Ensign Doorman could calculate the number of clear three sided pieces it had taken to create such a large dome along with the connecting framework that held it in place. "How many triangular pieces were used to create the dome?" asked Shayhiloosh. (Posted by Sheila) ===================================================================== (Romulus - Institute of Advanced Scientific Studies, Arboretum - Science Officer Ensign Harry Doorman - 1000) Harry was aroused from his brooding thoughts of the dangers that lay amongst the plants by Shayhiloosh's airy voice. "Ensign Doorman, would you like to accompany me?" asked Shayhiloosh. "I would enjoy your companionship and anyone else that wishes to come along." S/he hefted all of hir tricorders and activating them, began recording in differing directions. Harry wasn't certain if it was a request or a subtle order so he decided to err on the side of caution. Despite his preference which was to stay away from any plant that might spear him with three inch spikes or poison him with some exotic toxins of some sort. "Certainly. I'd be glad to." he replied instead and picked up his own data relay device and activated it. He then set his own tricorder to passively scan and record the botanical data as they walked along the paths and walkways. The headed down one of the paths, a couple of the other scientists from the group accompanied them while a few others headed off in their own little groups elsewhere. Harry just glanced down at his relay periodically to make certain that the data was relaying correctly to the ship. His interest in the plant life was more cautionary rather than curious. And so he wasn't particularly moved by some of the beauty that surrounded them. "How many triangular pieces were used to create the dome?" asked Shayhiloosh. "I'm sorry what?" harry asked, before the question registered in his brain. "Oh triangles in the dome?" he repeated the question rhetorically. "Lemme see." he said and stopped at a point where he could see an entire layer of triangular segments arranged in an opposing triangular ring. He counted them then estimated the distance between concentric rings and then performed the equations based on the information that the prefect had provided them when they arrived. "Twenty-two million, four hundred eighteen thousand, nine hundred and sixteen. With an error based on approximation of roughly six percent plus or minus." Harry replied. "Assuming that the dimension provided by the Prefect is correct and that the sphere is uniformly constructed as a true hemisphere." (posted by Daniel Greene) ===================================================================== (Romulus – Undisclosed Location – Senator Terrh – 1013) Since long before the sun had risen on the western skyline, many Romulans had been busy in preparation for the arrival of the Federation teams. Public areas had to be cleared of all non-authorised personnel, and sensitive data and equipment had been moved to more secure locations, away from prying eyes. What for, one might ask, if this is a diplomatic visit; a show of good will on behalf of either party. The truth was, there was very little in the way of trust being offered, and no one had the gall to actually admit it. So instead, many preparations were made in an attempt to cover up that this was not the normal operation of things. There had been no busier Romulan than Senator Terrh, member of the Continuing Committee, and open objector to the Praetors decision to establish peaceful relations. He had been making preparations of his own, trusting the humans even less than those who were pro-peace, but the preparations that Terrh had been making were a little more sinister than he would like to admit. For many years he had been a cooperative member of the Tal’Shiar, and despite regular disagreements with his our superior, Chairman Vaebn, he was still in his position of power. Was Terrh foolish enough to think it was because Vaebn would not touch him? Indeed he was, and that thought carried with it a dangerous bout of confidence that could very well spell the end of the Senator. Luckily for him, Vaebn had so far allowed him to work to his own end, given that the goal of the Senator was similar to his own. Finally nearing the end of his preparations, Terrh came to rest in his secret offices that, to the best of his knowledge, were unknown to the Praetor and his internal security forces. The room was dark and void of most of the decorative objects that adorned most of his quarter. Instead were three large computer screens, visual links to his various sources both in the Capitol district, his home province, and beyond. [I’ve just received word that that the science teams are now on surface. They have left the institute and are being escorted toward their respective test sites] The electronically disguised voice sounded quietly. The image on the computer screen was a blurred of dark shadows and interference. There was no way to identify the broadcaster from the visual reception. “I see, and have the necessary precautions been made?” Terrh stroked at his chin, his wide black eyes peering stonily at the screen. He had a lot riding on how events unfolded over the next few hours. Not only his own livelihood, but that of his entire family and estate too. [Indeed they have, Senator...] the voice started to say. The senator cut in instantly with a scolding, “Fool! Do not call me that here...” [...my apologies] came the instant response from the contact onscreen. Clearly he was of lower rank to the Senator, or some form of subordinate. He may have even been in the Senator’s employ. Nothing could really be certain at this stage. Instant calm returning to his voice, Terrh asked “What about the rebel contacts?” Since the news of Federation peace talks had spread out across the globe, so many separate splinter groups had shot up in defiance. In usual circumstances the Tal’Shiar would have neutralised them within days. Clearly the Tal’Shiar felt that their continued existence was of benefit to them somehow. [They have been persuaded to stay away from the federation teams...until the time is right] The contact made his turn of phrase seem almost open ended. Had Terrh not been privy to the plans, there could have been a number of different interpretations to that response. Terrh was obviously please with what his contact was telling him as he moved on to ask, “And what of Praetor? Is he still pampering himself with the Federation Ambassador?” The Senator almost spat out the final few words of that question. He found it repulsive that the Praetor was being so friendly with the Federation diplomats. In his eyes, they should be locked up and tortured for information. Especially given that Ambassador Frazier had a history with Starfleet. Information from her could be invaluable. [Praetor is still entertaining his guests, yes] “So they’re in position?” Terrh stressed this question very carefully. He offered no other detail or explanation for his query. It clearly wasn’t necessary as the contact replied flatly. [They are] “Then I suggest you put things into motion.” Terrh moved forward, ready to deactivate the transmitter and scramble all records of the broadcast. He knew well how to cover his tracks for such things. [For the one true empire] The final comment from the contact was almost rebellious in tone and content. After giving a sharp nod, the screen went dark, and so did the room. Plunged into darkness, the shadowed figure of the Senator reclined in the comfort of his chair. Beneath the blackness, a grin spread across his face, and in the distance, his laughter could be heard by the servants who went about their daily chores. (posted by Dave) ===================================================================== (USS Hades - Deck 14, CEO's office - CEO Lieutenant Norman Harper - 1102) Norm leaned back in the chair at his desk and exhaled deeply. He was taking his overdue break, and frankly, was finding it quite boring. He stretched back is long neck and stared at the ceiling wrapping his lanky arms behind his head so that his elbows nearly touched his ears. And, was silently disputing in his head whether he should take his full break, or just get back to his engines. Just as he made up his mind to get back to work and ignore the idle idea of a break, his PADD sounded with a message. He sighed and let his arms fall limply to his sides before he reached lazily into his pocket for the PADD which he thought he had left in the quarters. He could only imagine what it said as he scrolled through the screens. ~My replicator broke... again~ he thought as he reached the message alert. "Message from... Toni?" he read aloud before deciding he would open the note after all. His eyes moved quickly as he read. ::Norm, I wish I wasn't just writing to you just to ask a favour, but I am Italian and I do not, as you say, like to 'beat around the bush.':: Norm paused and smiled. He could imagine Toni speaking and gesticulating widely as he did so. The young man's dark curls would be spilling into his face as he shook his head, and though it would make most people just look messy, it would make Toni's grin more vibrant. ::Our ship, Bonsai, has been struck my a crippling tragedy, and I am turning to you to fill in the hole in our staff. An accident in the engines took our engineer from us, and since we are all a bunch of science 'nerds' none of us knows how to keep them running the way they should. Pop alway told me never to trust a machine without knowing how it works, and I was very good at ignoring him. The point is, Norman, you are the one who always understood machines. I am asking you to take up the temporary position of the engineer of The Bonsai. Just until we can get someone without the military obigations. Bertoni:: Norm could again see Toni gesticulating widely as he spoke, and smiled. But it was, of course, out of the question. As Toni had said, he had obligations. Obligations to his crew, to Starfleet, to... He immedeately began writing a response stating his sincere hope that The Bonsai got an engineer, but it would unfortunately would not be him. But he paused. There was something in the back of his mind that would not allow him to continue with the letter. His emotions had been on the fritz lately, unwanted memories had been resurfacing too often, and who was the only person who could ever calm them quickly? Bertoni Luzzatto. He shook his head and deleted the note he was writing. His mind was cloudy and at this point he just didn't know. He needed time to think about it, he needed time to get things in order... He cleared the screen of his PADD and tossed it onto his desk and quickly got up to exit back into the engines.
